Cinematography: Theory and Practice, Second Edition: Image Making for Cinematographers and Directors ReviewBlain Brown's second edition of "Cinematography: Theory and Practice" is a great resource for both aspiring and veteran cinematographers. It provides in depth, conclusive description of the techniques and conventions of visual language and lighting used throughout Hollywood and independent filmmaking. His status as a cinematography guru certainly shines through the book, and though it has some grammatical and spelling errors, the knowledge and information contained in between the covers is of ultimate importance and value.I purchased and read the book when I was first getting into my cinematography career, and regularly reference it even now that I have been working in the industry for a couple of years. Lighting, composition, and image-making in general are trades that take a lifetime to learn and master, and this book helps convey the magnitude of such an endeavor with its meticulous description, context, and imagery.
Perhaps the best part of the book is the illustrations, which contain screen grabs that demonstrate the particular technique, lighting style, or composition that is currently being discussed. Film and cinematography are visual mediums, and the images that accompany the descriptions make visualization and understanding much easier for the reader. Seeing is believing.Cinematography: Theory and Practice, Second Edition: Image Making for Cinematographers and Directors Overview
